Game No. 38 - July 27, 2010 - RAPIDS at Covington Casey Selsor scored on an infield error in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Covington to a 2-1 win over Rockbridge on Tuesday of last week. Three Lumberjack pitchers combined to limit the Rapids to one run on four hits in the extra-inning affair, dealing Rockbridge its fourth consecutive loss.

The annual late-summer local tennis tournament, which was first held in 1960 and was sponsored by the Lexington Rotary Club, will celebrate its 50th anniversary as the Rockbridge Tennis Association sponsors the 51st annual renewal of the net event on the last two weeks of August at the Washington and Lee University hard courts. Men’s and women’s singles competition will take place on Aug. 21 and 22. The registration deadline for singles play is Aug. 17

Brian Anken has been named the new head coach of VMI lacrosse. Hired by Lycoming in July of 2006, Anken implemented all offensive and defensive strategies for the team. He also supervised the assistant staff and was responsible for a large amount of fundraising, which helped subsidize the team’s travel and equipment expense

Game No. 14 – June 22, 2010 – New Market at RAPIDS New Market jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings, going on to win 8-3 at Rockbridge on Tuesday of last week. The Rapids cut the margin to 5-3 in the seventh inning when Andrew Siano scored on one of the Rebels’ four errors, but New Market would pull away with three runs in the top of the ninth.

Area baseball fans have two varied options fro observing excellent baseball play in Lexington this week. The Rockbridge Rapids are in their in their second season of play in the Valley Baseball League, one of the country’s premier summer wood-bat baseball leagues.
