Major Attractions

Virginians and frequent visitors to the Commonwealth are familiar with the silver and black historical markers along streets and highways throughout the state. These signs, silver with black lettering and a distinctive shape, have been placed near significant landmarks or to commemorate events or significant people in Virginia history since 1927. Today, there are over 2,200 Virginia historical highway markers.

Rockbridge County, Lexington and Buena Vista host quite a number of Virginia historical markers. It's fun to stop along the roadside and read them, but sometimes traffic is heavy or there isn't time to stop.

Here is a link to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources website, and the page showing the location of Rockbridge County's markers. You can click on each location to read the text of the marker.
