Eating and Dining.
Dining out is an important part of any vacation, whether it's a day trip or a week's stay. The Lexington/Rockbridge area has numerous restaurants and food service establishment to satisfy most desires, pocketbooks, and time restraints. There are long-established traditional restaurants, as well as fast food shops, coffee shops, bakeries and ethnic fare. You can eat in a restored 19th century manor house, a resort hotel dining room, a country inn, a deli, a downtown restaurant, or drive through for a hamburger, fried chicken or a burrito to take on a picnic. You can satisfy your hankering for Chinese, Mexican, Italian, French and American cuisine. Downtown Lexington has a variety of restaurants and food vendors, some with years of service to local diners and visitors. The Southern Inn, at 37 South Main Street is well-known to anyone who's spent any time in Lexington. Preparing great food since 1932, the Southern Inn serves contemporary and American cuisine, complimented by an extensive wine list. Across Main Street and a block and a half farther north you'll find the Sheridan Livery Inn. The inn's restaurant delights the eyes with its high ceilings, skylight and large windows. There is also an outdoor cafÈ for alfresco dining. The Livery specializes in fresh seafood but offers a variety of lunch and dinner selections from light fare to a full meal. The chicken salad croissant is especially good. The Palms, at 101 W. Nelson Street, truly is a Lexington tradition. Its luncheon fare includes a variety of sandwiches, soups, salads and an array of specialty burgers. Dinner items include steaks and seafood, pasta and chicken. You can enjoy a beverage and watch the town pass by through the large windows overlooking Hopkins Green. Elsewhere in downtown, at 23 S. Jefferson Street is the Daily Grind, featuring fresh roasted coffees, and lattes, mochas, chai teas, and baked goods and sandwiches. It's a great place for a pick-me-up during your walk around downtown Lexington. Downtown Lexington is a foodie's delight, with a wine shop, sushi bar, bakeries, a kitchen goods shop, ice cream parlor and the famed Cocoa Mills Chocolate Co. on Nelson Street. There's also a natural foods cooperative market. Buena Vista has its own culinary attractions, with Uncorked wine shop, a hot dog eatery that's a fun stop, an ice cream parlor, and several restaurants. Maple Hall, four miles north of Lexington on Rt. 11, is a country inn but its dining room is open to non-guests. The house is a restored 19th century manor house and the dining rooms are intimate and cozy. Also north of Lexington on Rt. 11, just before Maple Hall, is Lee Hi Travel Plaza. Lee Hi is a busy place 24 hours a day, and Berky's Restaurant inside is well worth the visit. Berky's serves breakfast anytime, features a Friday night seafood buffet and a wide variety of menu items to suit any taste. The Tin Toy CafÈ and Pedal Car Diner, in Berky's have a large collection of metal toys and pedal cars as part of the dÈcor. There's also a complete travel store for any forgotten item. A 75-minute drive west on I-64 will take you to Lewisburg, WV, another historic town and great for a day trip from Lexington. Don't miss lunch or dinner at the General Lewis Inn and Restaurant. The fine cuisine, the intimate and comfortable setting and the old-South charm of the General Lewis Inn will have you returning often. It's a good idea to call ahead for dinner reservations, though you won't need them for many of the restaurants listed below.
