The B&B Experience
For those who have never stayed in a bed and breakfast, the idea of staying in what is often someone’s home is daunting. But, in fact, B&Bs are becoming more popular every year. B&Bs offer an appealing alternative to the traditional hotel and motel rooms, and often feature amenities not found in other lodging choices. The bed and breakfast concept originated in Europe, and is quite popular there, especially in Great Britain. B&Bs began appearing in the United States about 40 years ago and today there are thousands of B&Bs throughout North America. What people appreciate most about staying in a bed and breakfast is that each establishment is unique. Your room might be furnished in antiques, have a fireplace or private porch, a library of books for your enjoyment or a four-poster bed covered with an Amish quilt. Your view may include a garden pond, a historic town or spectacular mountains. Architectural styles vary, from historic Victorian or Colonials to modern contemporary-style houses, log cabins or stone cottages. Some only offer one or two rooms for rent, others are larger. The average B&B has four or five rooms available, and all offer breakfast with the price of the room. This meal is distinct to each B&B, and might be Continental-style in your room, or a full country breakfast in a dining room. Just to make the distinction, country inns differ from their bed and breakfast cousins in that most country inns have a dining room that serves dinner to outside clientele as well as to inn guests. One common misconception is that B&Bs provide spartan accommodations. Most B&Bs today are air conditioned, have cable or satellite television, and offer private baths. Some have whirlpool or soaking tubs, tennis courts, swimming pools, common rooms with games, books, magazines and televisions and possibly even a piano for your enjoyment. Applewood Inn and Llama Trekking is situated on 35 acres in southern Rockbridge County. It features four bedrooms with private baths, three with fireplaces and either a whirlpool tub or hot tub. Large porches, a swimming pool and guest pantry add to your enjoyment. Applewood offers llama treks, fishing and just enjoying nature in an unspoiled setting. A hearty breakfast is included. www.applewoodbb.com Brierley Hill, minutes west of Lexington perches on the shoulder of Brushy Hill, where it enjoys a spectacular mountain and valley view. It has three rooms and three two-room suites, all with private baths. Bedrooms have sitting areas, TV/DVDs and four-poster beds. The suites offer separate sitting rooms with convertible sofa beds, stocked refrigerators and gas fireplaces. The baths feature whirlpool tubs. Guests enjoy sitting on the verandah and reading, having a tea or just reveling in the view. A country breakfast is included. www.brierleyhill.com Southern hospitality in a relaxed atmosphere is how the owners of The Mangus House describe their B&B. Located in Vesuvius, Va on the banks of South River, the house was a part of the original Cyrus McCormick farm, and served as the miller’s house for the lower mill. The Mangus House offers four bedrooms, each with private bath, and each with its own distinctive view. A stay at The Mangus House includes dinner as well as breakfast. An active trout stream flows through the property. www.mangushouse.com. Rider’s Rest Bed & Breakfast has the distinction of being within walking distance of the Virginia Horse Center. Though it’s in the country, it’s only two miles from downtown Lexington. Located in a 1920s era home, Riders Rest offers four bedrooms all with private baths, high speed Internet and a full breakfast. www.ridersrestbandb.com Yet another option to consider when planning your trip is staying in one of the areas many cottages. When you rent a cottage for several days, or a week, typically there are no other guests sharing the cottage with you, although there may be several cottages clustered together. Most are in peaceful rural settings, many with views of the area. Each cottage is unique, and come with a variety of amenities and sleeping capacities. Braford Cottage near Natural Bridge is one example of this style of accommodation. It’s facilities are modern and its views of the Blue Ridge are spectacular. It adjoins Antiques by Braford, so you can browse the selection of 18th and 19th century furniture, paintings, bronzes and accessories during your stay in the cottage. Below are Rockbridge area bed and breakfasts and cottages currently listed as members of the Lexington-Rockbridge County Chamber of Commerce.
