Judith McHale, under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, will deliver the 2010 Frances McNulty Logan Lewis Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 pm in Lee Chapel in Lexington.

“To Kill A Mockingbird” is turning 50 and readers will have a number of events to attend to revisit an old favorite with new eyes or discover the novel for the first time.

William C. Davis, a noted historian and professor of history at Virginia Tech, will be the featured speaker at the annual Remembering Robert E. Lee program on Monday, Oct. 11, at 12:15 p.m. in Lee Chapel. Davis’ topic is “Lee: The Man in the Middle.”

Handcrafted items from Africa will be for sale at the annual Rafiki Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Virginia Horse Center.

ARTIST Brett LaGue will demonstrate and discuss the plein air style of painting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hopkins Green during the third annual Plein Air Paint Out.

Marilyn Pearson will exhibit her art work at the Rockbridge Regional Library during October.

There will be plenty of activity at the historic McCormick Farm near Steeles Tavern this Saturday, Oct. 2, when the McCormick Farm Mill Day returns. The free event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Rockbridge Regional Library at 138 S. Main Street in Lexington will be having its next book sale on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday, Oct. 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Children in grades kindergarten through fifth are invited to explore opposites with craft activities at the Rockbridge Regional Library on Wednesdays in October from 4 to 5 p.m.
