On Sept. 9, 1946, Lewane matriculated to Virginia Military Institute. At VMI he rode in the horse cavalry troop and won his varsity letter as a midfielder on the first VMI lacrosse team. On June 13, 1950, he graduated from VMI with a BS degree in pre-medicine and a Regular Army commission in the armored cavalry. Lee's first assignment was a tank platoon leader in the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Meade, Md. Within a year, he was on orders to the Korean War, serving first in 1952 as a tank platoon leader in the 2nd Infantry Division, then in 1953 as a tank company commander in the 3rd Infantry Division. In 1955, he was posted as a tank company commander in the 509th Tank Battalion, a.k.a 9th Cavalry, at Fort Knox, Ky., where he met, courted and married Sara Sue McMillan on April 7, 1956, at the post chapel in a military wedding. Their marriage would continue for some 55 years. By the summer of that year, Lee and Sally arrived in the Bavarian city of Regensburg, only to be separated when Lee was ordered to the Czechoslovakian-West German border during the Suez crisis and the Hungarian Uprising of 1956 as an armored cavalry company commander in the 6th Cavalry and later in the 11th Cavalry. Returning stateside to VMI in 1959, Lee and Sally were blessed in 1960 with the birth of twins Catherine Sue and Victoria Ann on Aug. 17. In addition, the youngest daughter, Gloria Leigh, was born in 1964. Soon after, Lee was deployed to Vietnam in 1965, first as an operations staff officer in Saigon, then as commander of the 1st Squadron 4th Cavalry in the legendary 1st Big Red One” Infantry Division. The squadron fought three fierce battles in 1966 and was decorated with U.S. Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism. Upon his return to the states , was selected to attend the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala., and was conferred with an MA degree in international affairs from George Washington University and a MS degree in political science from Auburn University. In 1972, Lee and Sally returned to West Germany as commander and first lady of the 1st Brigade of the 1st Armored Division, followed by an assignment as chief of staff, U.S. Army, Berlin, until 1974. Lewane's terminal assignment was at Fort Monroe with the Training and Doctrine Command as director of the development of the M1 Abrams tank and the Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. Upon withdrawing from active Army service in 1976, Lewane taught history and government at Blue Ridge Community College near Staunton for 28 years. HART SLATER Hart Slater, 90, of Lexington passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 11,, 2017, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Bonnie Jean Jackson Slater, and his children, David Hart Slater (Beth) of Houston, Texas, Jeanne Slater Trimble (David) of Oak Hill, and Susan Slater Hartman (Jeff) of Cornelius, N.C. He adored and was adored by his eight grandchildren: Jill Slater (Tom Crosbie), Melanie Slater, Benjamin Slater (Samantha), Robert Trimble (Christine), David Trimble (Katie), Byron Hartman (Lauren), Jeffrey Hartman, and Caroline Hartman (fiancé Phil). He also cherished the time he had with his five great-grandchildren: Rae and Calvin Crosbie, Colette Trimble, and Bennett and Virginia Hartman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Hall Slater and Ora Evelyn Grace Slater, and a grandson, Tyler Hartman. He never stopped grieving for his beloved sister, Eula Lee Slater Maddrey, her husband, Larry, and their young daughters, Linda and Janet, who were all tragically killed in a car accident in 1957. Born on July 23, 1926, Hart grew up in Williamson, W.Va. He said when he was 9 years old, he fell in love with a little girl there named Bonnie Jean Jackson. But after the Depression, his family moved to Portsmouth, where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He then enrolled at the College of William and Mary where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He had not been there long when he received a letter from Uncle Sam drafting him into the Second World War, or as he always said, an offer of an all-expense paid trip to Europe. He served as a corporal in the United States Army in Germany. When the war ended, he returned to the college to complete his degree in business administration. He then accepted a teaching position in accounting at the Norfolk Branch of the College of William and Mary. Having never forgotten about his childhood love, Hart returned to Williamson to ask for Bonnie's hand in marriage. They were wed on Dec. 20, 1949, and returned to Norfolk. A few years later, he was promoted to business manager and the school was renamed Old Dominion College. In 1969, he moved his family to Lexington, where he became the business executive at the Virginia Military Institute, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. Hart was active in the community as a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club and served on the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Board, one term as chairman. He was a member of Manly Memorial Baptist Church. In his retirement, he and Bonnie took the entire family on many wonderful cruises and they rented a beach house each and every summer for the family to reunite. Last July, the beach was the setting of a joyous 90th birthday celebration in his honor. These trips provide so many special memories to his grateful family. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held Saturday, Jan. 14,,at VMI's Jackson Memorial Hall. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Manly Memorial Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 202 S. Main St., Lexington, VA 24450 or to the VMI Keydet Club, P.O. Box 932, Lexington, VA 24450. Arrangements were by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
