DOROTHY CHRISTIANSENDorothy Christiansen died in her sleep on Sept. 9, 2016, at the Blue Ridge Christian Home in Raphine. She was 96 years old.Dorothy was born on Oct. 12, 1919, in Newark, N.J.   She was the youngest of 6 children in a first generation Irish family.  After marriage to George in 1938 and after the disruption of the war years she and George, who had started his own small business, relocated to Cedar Grove, N.J., in 1953. They spent 47 years there raising two boys, Robert and Carl and running a successful restaurant supply business.  The boys were long since gone and they had retired in 1975. In 2000, George and Dorothy knew that age was catching up and they needed to move near to one of their two sons.  They chose to move to Virginia near Carl since California would have been too distant and too foreign for a Newark girl.Dorothy lived in the Beulah Land independent living village in Raphine with George until his death in 2002.  She lived alone and in good health until 2012 when she moved to the Legacy assisted living facility in Staunton. The aging process was relentless and in 2014 she needed to move back to Raphine, this time to the Blue Ridge Christian Home full care facility.  Although living in a nursing facility is never one’s first choice, Dorothy was very grateful to be in the most loving and nurturing facility that she could imagine. She died in September with complications from throat cancer leaving both of her sons and daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.Dorothy’s affairs are being handled by the Harrison Funeral Home.
